Our city schools offer the greatest variety in the area of programs and services for students, preschool through twelfth grade, one high school, four middle schools, ten elementary buildings, and an alternative school for special needs and at-risk students. Advanced placement and honors offerings at the high school level and student success on AP college-placement tests are unmatched in Springfield/Clark County. The district offers the rigorous and well-respected International Baccalaureate program. High school students may also participate in the Ohio Post Secondary Enrollment option to earn college credit at Ohio colleges and universities or other diploma-earning, career preparation programs at the Career Technology Center (formerly JVS) and OIC. Summer programming for high school learning is also available. Middle and high school students may participate in an extensive array of extra-curricular activities--from drama to language clubs to music, plus interscholastic sports in all seasons in the Greater Western Ohio Conference.
The instructional program for middle schools intensified last year and electives added to a strong core program in reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies. Elementary learning is based on district-devised, state-approved Courses of Study in all areas and bolstered with several programs, including a Reading First Grant, summer learning sessions for identified grades/students, and new textbooks.
The Springfield City Schools boasts of ten new elementary schools, four new middle
schools and Keifer Alternative School. Contruction of Springfield High School began in 2006 and opened September 8, 2008. The new schools are part of the
$166 million construction project under the Ohio School Facilities
Commission which was approved by Springfield voters in November
2000. Each new school is designed for versatile, long-term service
with safety, security and forward-thinking technology, including
student and staff access to computers, Internet and other state-of-the-art
technology for teaching and learning. All new buildings are air-conditioned,
with opportunities and space for community and school use throughout
the year with easy access for parents and accommodations for students,
staff, volunteers or visitors with physical disabilities.
